Living Alone After the Death of a Spouse

Has your spouse recently died? Are you feeling lost? Do your friends and family seem to have moved on with their lives and are giving you less support? Is preparing a meal for one person an awful task for you? Whether you have had time to prepare for the loss of a spouse, or not, living alone for the first time in a long time can be confusing and frustrating.

It's can be pretty quiet in a house with one person. Nothing brushing your leg in the night and waking you from a sound sleep, no noise comes while you're deep in thought and breaks your concentration. You can now do anything that you have ever wanted to do, without being discouraged by the well meaning person you've admired. But now, none of it matters?

The grief process can go on as long as you need it to, but in the end you will find it necessary to pick yourself back up, and create a new life. The good news is, your new life is there waiting for you to create it. If the quietness is making you crazy, have some friends over. If you can't think of a reason to have people over, create one such as a book club or a potluck of all raw foods? Try a new hobby by joining a group that sounds interesting to you. Perhaps you want to experience energy work, then take a class. Keep in mind that nothing you start needs to be finished. You are an adult and you can decide to shift interests anytime you want to. Sample a taste of something new and then decide if you want to continue. Just start. Keep your mind open, and be willing to consider some new concepts. Be thoughtful of the fact that you are living in the twenty-first century. There are options that you have never heard of. Think outside of the box, try something that you have no experience with. Instead of quilting, find a group that meditates or does yoga. Instead of walking for exercise, find a group that hikes.

It is up to you to fill your life with abundance. You are starting over, in many ways, but this time you are more mature and experienced. You are looking for something very different then you were in your youth. Happiness has a new meaning, and the route will be more direct and simpler to find. When you are ready to make the shift into joy, know that the world is waiting for your smile.
