How to Create an Effective Internet Dating Profile

When you first bite the bullet and join an Internet dating website, it can be rather daunting when faced with challenge of "selling" yourself online. This is especially true when you have been out of the dating game for a long time and the last time you were single was when Abba rocked the charts.

Thankfully fashions have changed and so have dating rules. These days, all you need to do is find a site, create a profile, and then peruse your potential suitors while sipping a crisp chardonnay. But how do you write a great Internet dating profile that makes you sound alluring and interesting enough for some of these potential suitors to contact you?

Don't panic. By following these simple tips, you will soon have dates lining up like skittles!

First and most importantly, you need a decent picture. By not posting a picture, most shallow types that frequent Internet dating websites will assume you have something to hide: like a hideous facial deformity or a suspicious spouse. Always post a recent picture. It is considered false advertising if you use the picture taken ten years ago when you still had hair and you were two hundred pounds lighter.

Try and think of a snappy headline for your profile. It needs to be original-"Man seeks Woman" is not original. Nor is "Desperate Man Seeks Anyone". If you are stuck for inspiration, ask a friend. They might have a few ideas that work.

Think very carefully before you list your hobbies. Enjoying sports and movies is fine and pretty much normal. Mentioning your deep and abiding fascination with guns is not considered normal. Nor is breeding pit bulls for fun. If these really are your hobbies, please consider counselling, not dating. Just remember, your profile will stand out more if you have a few less obvious interests. But don't lie and say you are into something obscure like Japanese films. You may well get caught out by meeting someone who really IS into obscure Japanese films!

Many online dating site profiles ask you to say what would be a great first date. This is a good way of showing how romantic you are. If a stroll on a windswept beach sounds fun to you, then say so. At least it beats "going for a beer" as a first date. On the other hand, suggesting that you would like to cook a five course dinner followed by a long chat about how many children you want, is probably not a great proposed first date. It falls into "creepy" territory.

Lastly, be yourself. Write about what is really important to you. If you are only looking for "no strings fun", then say so. If you are hoping for something that lasts for more than two hours, then also say so. It is all too common for members of dating websites to say one thing and blatantly do another.

Once you have written your Internet dating profile, ask a friend to check it over. They might be able to suggest a few tweaks that make all the difference. Finally, save the changes and wait to see how many "hits" you have. If you have posted a decent picture, you are likely to have lots. It is a sad fact of dating that most of us are a shallow bunch and looks matter!

Thankfully, there are still some genuine people out there, and with a bit of luck you will get to meet one or two of them for a date...
