Living the Fruitful Life of Single-Hood

Author: Maria Beck

Single life can be complex, especially when you are newly divorced or widowed. According to Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary the definition of single is "singular, one only, not married, of relating to one person." This sounds pretty empty and desolate. After all who really is single? The amount of time human beings are completely by themselves is very little. We work with other people, we pass others on the sidewalk, there are people we communicate with in stores and restaurants. Therefore, recently singled people should not be intimidated by their new status. All of your connections with strangers or old acquaintances create a valuable opportunity to make a friend, meet a lover, or just share the joy of the day with someone.

The new single community in the United States consists of millions of people. In fact, statistics in the United States today are that there are currently 14 million single parents. Here is how it breaks down:

  • Most of the single parents are custodial mothers, in fact 83.1% are.
  • This compares to 16.9% who are custodial fathers.
  • Widows total 1.7% of the single parent group.
  • Single mothers that are divorced or separated comprise 45.9%, and
  • 30.5% of single mothers never married.

More people than ever have accepted being single and are raising their child/children alone. There are people that do not have children and decided they would like to remain single. There are heterosexual and gay couples enjoying life together openly.

Times have changed; people are embracing single-hood or relationships outside of the traditional model of man and woman as a couple. Being single is definitely cool and fashionable. So get with it and strut your stuff! The thing to remember is you are in the mainstream now. Keep yourself happy, healthy, and fit; make sure you tune into your finances too.

You think all of this is easier said than done?

Start with weeding your garden, so to say. Disconnect with anyone that is negative, mean and selfish. If you cannot disconnect completely, keep your distance from them. Surround yourself with people who are cheerful, positive and supportive. Remember your best interpersonal associations are usually a carbon copy of you, your thoughts, your beliefs. Re-evaluate your friends and spend time with the ones who you are proud to be with. Hobbies are very important. Get involved in something you always wanted to do, but perhaps you never had time for. Make time! Do what you love to do. You will learn new things, make positive affirmations, build your self-confidence and meet new people.

Accept fitness and wellness as a lifestyle. Stay strong and limber...release endorphins and relieve stress. Working out and making healthy food choices is one of the most important things you can ever do for yourself. Bring the gift of wellness to your table. Rejoice in a happier, healthier you.

Finances are the key to freedom. Focus on health insurance, disability insurance and life insurance if you have a child/children. Make sure you plan for your wonderful, fruitful future. Keep ready cash at hand for emergencies. It will always help you to feel a little more secure.

Now, you can start living the fruitful life of single-hood. Take charge, enjoy your freedom, get lost in your creativity; and always remember, SINGLE IS COOL AND FASHIONABLE NOW. Enjoy!
